Lourdes Gurriel Jr. carries Diamondbacks past slumping Mets

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had three hits, including a homer, and drove in two runs, Zac Gallen recorded his first home victory this season and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the New York Mets 5-1 in Phoenix on Tuesday.Gurriel’s two-run homer off Mets starter David Peterson (2-2) in the sixth inning gave the Diamondbacks a 4-1 lead, and Gallen and the bullpen did the rest.Gallen (3-4) gave up two hits and struck out six in seven innings, his longest start of the season. He faced the minimum 13 after walking in a run in the third.Pete Alonso had the Mets’ RBI when he walked with the bases loaded and two outs in the third, after Gallen gave up a single to Francisco Alvarez and walked Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto.Mark Vientos singled off Gallen with one out in the seventh before Jeff McNeil grounded into a double play on Gallen’s 101st pitch to end the inning.Francisco Alvarez had two singles for the Mets, who put two runners on in the ninth against Shelby Miller but did not score when Vientos flew out to end the game. They have lost five of seven.Gallen beat the Mets in New York on May 1 with a similar outing, giving up one run and two hits in six innings of a 4-2 victory.Josh Naylor drove in two runs on a groundout and a sacrifice fly and scored twice and late lineup addition Jose Herrera had two hits for the Diamondbacks, who have won two of three. Gabriel was a pre-game scratch.
