Jeff McNeil, Juan Soto rally Mets past Nats

Jeff McNeil laced a walk-off double in the 10th inning as the New York Mets rallied for a 5-4 win over the visiting Washington Nationals on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series.

The Mets trailed 3-0 and 4-2 before earning their fourth straight win and 13th victory in their last 16 games.

McNeil had an RBI single in the second and Juan Soto homered in the third before the Mets tied the game with two outs in the eighth. Soto drilled a run-scoring double against Jose Ferrer and raced home on Pete Alonso’s single off Kyle Finnegan.

After Reed Garrett (2-2) tossed a hitless 10th to strand automatic runner CJ Abrams, McNeil doubled on the first pitch from Cole Henry (0-1) to drive in pinch-runner Luisangel Acuna.

Soto finished 2-for-4 and is batting .378 with four homers, eight RBIs and a .549 on-base percentage in his last 11 games.

Nathaniel Lowe hit a two-run homer in the first while Abrams laced an RBI double and delivered a homer in the fifth for the Nationals, who fell to 2-6 this month.

Abrams also doubled leading off the game and finished 3-for-5. The three extra-base hits tied a season and career-high for Abrams, who hit two homers and a double in a 10-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles on May 18. He is the first shortstop this season to produce three extra-base hits twice.

Nationals starter MacKenzie Gore, who was traded to Washington along with Abrams and starting outfielders James Wood and Robert Hassell III in the blockbuster deal that sent Soto to the San Diego Padres in 2022, allowed two runs on five hits while striking out six over six innings.

Wood was 1-for-4 Tuesday while Hassell finished 0-for-4.

Mets starter Griffin Canning gave up four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four over 5 1/3 innings.
