Mitch Marner scored a 4-on-3 power-play goal at 2:40 of overtime to give the Vegas Golden Knights a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night in Las Vegas.
With Scott Laughton in the penalty box for tripping Shea Theodore six seconds earlier, Marner snapped a wrist shot from the high slot past a screen by Mark Stone and beyond the glove of Kings goaltender Darcy Kuemper for the game-winner and his second goal of the season. It was Marner’s eighth career overtime winner and his first with the Golden Knights.
Trevor Connelly scored a goal and assisted on the game-winner, while Stone had two assists for Vegas, which extended its winning streak to four games. Carter Hart made 26 saves for the Golden Knights, who leapfrogged the Edmonton Oilers to move back into first place in the Pacific Division.
Artemi Panarin scored the lone goal for Los Angeles, which remains winless (0-2-2) under first-year head coach Peter Laviolette. The Kings also have opened a season with four consecutive losses for the first time in franchise history.
Maple Leafs 6, Avalanche 3
William Nylander had two goals and three assists, Auston Matthews had two goals and two assists, and Toronto downed Colorado in Denver.
Nylander’s three assists and five points matched his career highs. Easton Cowan and Nick Blankenburg also scored, Nick Paul had two assists and Sergei Bobrovsky turned away 30 shots for the Maple Leafs.
Nathan MacKinnon had two goals, Brock Nelson also scored and Mackenzie Blackwood had 17 saves for the Avalanche, who lost for the first time in three home games this season.
Wild 4, Panthers 1
Kirill Kaprizov tallied his seventh career hat trick and added an assist, and Minnesota handed host Florida its first regulation loss of the season in Sunrise, Fla.
Matt Boldy had the other Wild goal, on a wrist shot 53 seconds into the game. He also assisted on one of Kaprizov’s tallies. Goaltender Jesper Wallstedt stopped 29 of 30 shots to earn the victory as Minnesota ended a two-game winless skid.
Matthew Tkachuk scored Florida’s lone goal, off a rebound of his own shot in the second period. Goaltender Jacob Markstrom allowed three goals on 28 shots.
Lightning 5, Islanders 3
Brandon Hagel ripped a tiebreaking goal with 1:44 remaining and completed his fourth career hat trick with an empty-netter as Tampa Bay claimed its fourth straight victory, beating host New York.
Tied 3-all, Hagel rifled a shot past Ilya Sorokin (21 saves) with a long wrister for his second goal. He added an assist for a four-point night. Jake Guentzel tallied twice, and Nikita Kucherov and Max Crozier each had two assists. Goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 20 shots.
Tony DeAngelo recorded a goal and an assist, and Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Brayden Schenn scored as the Islanders lost for the first time in three games on home ice.
Bruins 5, Flyers 1
Capping a three-point effort, Fraser Minten’s second goal of the season concluded a three-goal third period for Boston in a win over visiting Philadelphia.
Pavel Zacha and Mason Lohrei scored to give Boston leads after the first two periods. Marat Khusnutdinov and Casey Mittelstadt also lit the lamp, while Minten and JJ Peterka each had two assists and Jeremy Swayman made 14 saves.
Porter Martone scored a power-play goal and Dan Vladar (27 saves) took the loss for Philadelphia, which remains winless in six games this season. The Flyers were missing Travis Konecny (lower-body) and Cam York (upper-body) due to day-to-day injuries.
Oilers 3, Sharks 1
Tristan Jarry made 19 saves as Edmonton skated to a win against host San Jose.
Mattias Ekholm, Vasily Podkolzin and Alex Formenton scored while Connor McDavid increased his early-season points total to 13 with an assist for the Oilers, who have won four straight games since dropping their season opener to the Vancouver Canucks.
Macklin Celebrini’s first goal of the season was the lone score for the Sharks, who have dropped two of their last three. Celebrini, who missed two games with a lower-body injury, led San Jose with 21:59 of ice time and placed two shots on goal. Yaroslav Askarov made 17 saves.
Canadiens 1, Red Wings 0
Zack Bolduc scored the only goal of a shootout that went three extra rounds to give host Montreal the win over Detroit.
Because the game was scoreless after 65 minutes both goalies — Jacob Fowler of Montreal and Detroit’s Daniil Tarasov — were credited with a shutout. Both made 30 saves and both picked up their second career shutout.
There were chants from the Montreal crowd of “We want Larkin” at times when the Red Wings’ Dylan Larkin was on the ice, but booed him during his shootout attempt. Larkin asked to be traded in the.
Hurricanes 5, Blackhawks 2
Jackson Blake and Jordan Martinook both scored once and added an assist, and visiting Carolina used a three-goal second period to beat slumping Chicago.
Mark Jankowski, Sebastian Aho and Taylor Hall also scored for the Hurricanes, who have won four straight games. Goaltender Brandon Bussi made 24 saves and Mike Reilly collected two assists.
Roman Kantserov, with his first NHL goal, and Oliver Moore replied for the Blackhawks, while goalie Spencer Knight made 34 saves. Chicago has just one win in six games to start the season.
Mammoth 4, Sabres 1
Utah scored twice on its league-leading power play and routed host Buffalo.
After Buffalo’s Tage Thompson and Utah’s Kailer Yamamoto traded goals in the first period, the Mammoth broke the game open with two goals in just over two minutes late in the middle frame.
Karel Vejmelka made 23 saves in his third win of the season while Colten Ellis stopped 26 in the loss. Yamamoto, John Marino and offseason acquisition Anders Lee each recorded a goal and an assist in the win.
Devils 4, Canucks 1
Nico Hischier scored twice on the power play, including his 200th career goal, and New Jersey rallied to beat Vancouver in Newark, N.J.
Jake Allen made 20 saves in his 500th career game to get the win as the Devils snapped a two-game losing skid. Jesper Bratt had a goal and an assist, Jesper Boqvist also scored and Jack Hughes had two assists for the Devils, who finished with three goals on the power play to claim their second win of the season.
Linus Karlsson had a goal while Leevi Merilainen and Kevin Lankinen combined to stop 33 shots for the Canucks, who suffered their third consecutive loss. Paul Cotter, the NHL’s Third Star of the Week, was held pointless in his first game with the Canucks against his former team.
Senators 3, Predators 2 (SO)
Shane Pinto beat Matt Murray in the third round of the shootout as Ottawa rallied for a win over visiting Nashville.
Tim Stutzle had a goal and an assist in regulation and scored in the second round of the shootout. Drake Batherson also scored for the Senators, while Ottawa goaltender Linus Ullmark stopped 16 shots.
Ross Colton and Jonathan Marchessault scored first-period goals, and Ryan O’Reilly had a shootout goal for Nashville. Murray recorded 18 saves in his first start since the 2023-24 season, when he played for the Dallas Stars.
Penguins 2, Stars 1 (SO)
Rickard Rakell scored the shootout winner in the fourth round and host Pittsburgh edged Dallas. Ben Kindel and Sidney Crosby also tallied in the shootout for the Penguins while Seguin and Wyatt Johnston scored for the Stars.
After Rakell’s goal put Pittsburgh up, goalie Arturs Silovs deflected Mikko Rantanen’s shot to end it.
The Stars forced overtime when Tyler Seguin tied it 1-1 with 30 seconds left in regulation. Jake Oettinger made 19 saves. Connor Dewar scored his first goal of the season for the Penguins. Silovs made 24 saves to earn the victory.
Blues 5, Blue Jackets 3
Jimmy Snuggerud scored two second-period goals in quick succession and Jonatan Berggren scored the game-winning goal to help St. Louis halt its three-game slide with a home win over Columbus.
The Blues entered the matchup buried in offensive woes during their three-game losing skid but found their flow as Jake Neighbours and Pavel Buchnevich also found the back of the net and Dylan Holloway picked up three assists. Jordan Binnington made 20 saves as he recorded his first victory of the season.
Cole Sillinger, Kent Johnson, and Valeri Nichushkin lit the lamp for the Blue Jackets, while Jet Greaves finished with 22 saves.
Ducks 4, Flames 2
Ryan Poehling broke a third-period tie and added an assist to pace visiting past winless Calgary.
Frank Vatrano, Jackson LaCombe and Nikita Nesterenko also scored, and Mikael Granlund had two assists for the Ducks, who have won four of their first five games. Goaltender Ville Husso made 27 saves in his first start of the season for the win.
Morgan Frost and Aydar Suniev each scored, and Matt Coronato collected two assists for the Flames, who have lost their first five games in the worst start in franchise history and are the only without a point this season.
