The New York Islanders surrendered a three-goal, second-period lead but went on to win their first shootout of the season, beating the host Nashville Predators 4-3 on Tuesday.
Anthony Duclair, Brayden Schenn and Bo Horvat scored in regulation for the Islanders. Kyle Palmieri and Horvat scored in the shootout.
Semyon Varlamov made 20 saves for New York, which had lost its other two games that went past regulation. In his first NHL victory since November 2024, Varlamov also poke-checked the puck away from Nashville’s Ryan O’Reilly to open the shootout.
Filip Forsberg had a goal and an assist for the Predators, who earned at least a point in their third straight game (1-0-2). Alexander Kerfoot and O’Reilly also scored.
Juuse Saros stopped 25 shots in defeat.
The Islanders controlled the first period, outshooting Nashville 9-6 and scoring twice in a five-minute span.
Duclair scored his third goal of the season during a 4-on-4 stretch with 16:53 remaining in the opening period. From the low slot, he redirected Jean-Gabriel Pageau’s crossing pass from the boards.
Schenn doubled the Islanders’ lead with 11:53 remaining in the first, scoring on a second effort. His fourth goal of the season came off a pass from Ondrej Palat to the net.
Horvat made it 3-0 just 68 seconds into the second period with a one-timer off a pass from Matthew Schaefer. It was Horvat’s team-high sixth goal, and Schaefer recorded his team-leading ninth assist. Simon Holmstrom also helped set up the play.
Nashville finally got on the board midway through the second on a power play after Schenn was called for hooking. Forsberg scored his third goal of the season and second in as many games, with assists from Jonathan Marchessault and Steven Stamkos.
The Predators pulled within one with 6:58 remaining in the second when Kerfoot took the puck away in the Islanders’ zone and eventually put in a rebound off Nils Hoglander’s second shot on goal.
O’Reilly tied the game with 15:44 remaining in regulation, just 21 seconds after leaving the penalty box, putting home a loose rebound off a shot by Daemon Hunt.
The Islanders controlled most of the five-minute overtime, aided by a tripping penalty against Forsberg. Forsberg then shot wide on Nashville’s second attempt in the shootout, allowing Horvat to seal the win with his ensuing goal.
