Syracuse NCAA Tournament Dreams Are Over

After the Orange lost a critically important game to Florida State 80-77, the only thing I could think about was this song.

The Orange blew a golden opportunity to get a statement win. The Orange led 68-64 with 3:49 left to go in the game. They were just minutes away from a HUGE win. Sadly after that the Orange were outscored 16-9 by the Seminoles and let a key game slip through their fingers. Many Orange fans are wondering if there is still a chance for SU to make the tournament?

Technically speaking yes, if they win the ACC tournament they would get an automatic berth. However it was only 2 years ago that the Orange got their first ACC tournament win EVER. So don’t count on that happening.

The reality is the Orange are done. They are currently 64th in the latest NET Rankings, they show up nowhere on the latest Bracket Matrix, and they have a 14-11 overall record and are 7-7 in conference play. It’s looking terrible for the Orange right now.

It’s not like this team hasn’t had their opportunities to get wins. Oklahoma State, Penn State, Iowa, Georgetown, Duke, NC State, Florida State you name it. Even just two or three wins against any of these teams would put Syracuse close to the bubble. They have one last opportunity to get a key win tomorrow night on the road against Louisville. But even with that, it’s just not going to be enough to get in.

The ACC has been a disaster this season. According to the Bracket Matrix, only 4 ACC teams will make the tournament (Duke, Louisville, Florida State, and Virginia). In past years, the Orange could lean on the ACC as they have been routinely one of the best conferences in the nation. This year has been incredibly weak and those conference wins are devalued compared to even a year ago.

Time is running out for the Orange. There are 6 games left in the regular season. The ACC tournament is just around the corner. If this team is going to playing in March, they have to win out and make a deep run in the ACC tournament to even be considered. Let’s stop joking ourselves, there is no way in hell this team is going to be able to do any of that. I hope I’m wrong about this article in a few weeks, but I’m calling it here. This season is over. Stick a fork in them. The Orange are done.
