The Buffalo Sabres have assigned struggling winger Tage Thompson to its minor league affiliate Rochester.
The former first-round pick of the St. Louis Blues hadn’t scored a goal in 23 games, having tallied just 12 points (seven goals) with a minus-22 rating in 65 games in his first season in Buffalo. The Sabres acquired Thompson, 21, last July in a multi-player trade that sent Ryan O’Reilly to St. Louis.
The Sabres on Wednesday called up rookie Victor Olofsson, who was leading Rochester of the American Hockey League with 60 points. The Sabres play Detroit on Thursday.
The Sabres made Thompson available for the AHL’s Calder Cup playoffs last month.
