Jets hire Cooter to coach RBs, Carter for DL

The New York Jets officially announced their coaching staff on Friday, including former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter as running backs coach.Once a possible head-coaching candidate — who interviewed for the Lions’ vacant job last year before staying on as Matt Patricia’s coordinator — Cooter was not retained by the Lions when his contract expired after the 2018 season. He reportedly interviewed for coordinator openings in Cleveland and Arizona, but those teams went with different options.Cooter, 34, knows new Jets head coach Adam Gase from the Denver Broncos, where Cooter was an offensive assistant in 2013 in Gase’s first year as offensive coordinator.Cooter became Detroit’s offensive coordinator midway through 2015 and helped Matthew Stafford have a career season in 2017, as the Lions finished seventh in points and 13th in yards that season. However, Detroit finished 25th in points and 24th in yards in 2018, more in line with its rankings in 2015 and 2016.Meanwhile, the Jets hired former Pro Bowl defensive lineman Andre Carter to coach the D-line in New York. After totaling 80.5 sacks in a 13-year career, Carter got his first NFL coaching job under Gase in 2017, spending the last two years as the Dolphins’ assistant D-line coach.
